Hungary’s hopes of qualifying to the World Cup remain alive despite losing 2-1 to Sweden on Saturday.
Though the Magical Magyars have failed to record a win in their last three international games, double wins over Albania and Malta previously look to have minimized the pressure.
Hungary hold a three-point advantage against fourth-placed Portugal with three more matches to go before the end of the campaign .
Among these three matches left, Hungary have a double header against the Portuguese. The first part of this mission comes on Wednesday evening and expectations are high in the camp of the Hungarians.
Knowing that the chase for the top spot in Group A is not over yet, Hungary will surely play at their full strength to clinch the maximum points away from the out-of-form Portuguese.
Only four points separate Hungary from the leaders Denmark as nine more points remain at stake.
Portugal
The gate to enter the promise land which is South Africa is narrowing every match day for the Portuguese. With only two victories from seven games in the qualifiers, Portugal find themselves fourth in the table behind Hungary and Sweden.
The standings explain that Portugal’s fate doesn’t only lies in their own hands now. The disappointing 1-1 draw against Denmark on Saturday has left Portugal hanging from a thread.
Winning the remainder of their qualifiers is not the only solution for the Portuguese to stand the chance of playing in the World Cup. Now their eyes will be on Sweden’s result too.
Either way, ahead of Wednesday’s thrilling encounter away to Hungary, Portugal will be focused on nothing else but this all-important clash.
Carlos Queiroz will need to readjust his tactics at the back for Portugal. The former Manchester United assistant manager is certainly aware of the danger that Hungary’s Sandor Torghelle could pose to his defenders. However, the worry is especially upfront where Portugal’s forwards struggle to find the back of the net.
Statistically, everyone would expect the Portuguese to bag at least three goals per game because of the amount of chances that they create. But this has not been the case and as time passes by, their dream of qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa is fading away.
Pressure will also be high on Cristiano Ronaldo to perform as a real leader, not just tactically but also mentally. The 2008 World Player of the Year has still not recorded a single goal in Portugal’s World Cup qualification campaign.
The Serbs have a home game against second place France and a four-point lead. A victory in Belgrade will put them through with the French then sweating on whether they make the runners up playoffs.
"If we have to go through the playoffs, we will," said France striker Thierry Henry. "If we don't finish first we'll have to make sure we finish second, even though it's sad to say. Since I've been in the French team we've often got in through the back door. Whatever happens, we have to get to South Africa."
Slovakia is close to reaching its first World Cup and, despite being held 2-2 at home by neighbour Czech Republic on Saturday, still leads Group 3 by two points from Northern Ireland.
The two teams meet in Belfast on Wednesday and a Slovakia victory, coupled with a draw between Slovenia and Poland when they meet in Maribor, would spark celebrations back home.
The Czechs are still not out of contention for a playoff spot despite a poor qualifying campaign. They should beat San Marino at home and, depending on the other results, can still finish second.
Denmark can advance from Group 1 with a victory away to Albania, providing Portugal wins against Hungary in Budapest and Sweden fails to beat Malta.
Portugal remains in deep trouble, however, even after capturing a point away to Denmark on Saturday, and there is a strong chance that Cristiano Ronaldo - the most expensive player in the game's history and FIFA's player of the year - will not play in the World Cup.
The draw left the Portuguese seven points behind the Danes and back in fourth place with three games to go, and the team needs to beat second-place Hungary in Budapest on Wednesday to realistically stay in contention.
Denmark, which visits Albania, has 17 points, Hungary 13 and Sweden, which should win comfortably in Malta, is third with 12 points.
World Cup holder Italy will move four points clear at the top of Group 8 by beating Bulgaria at home, a result which would mean the Bulgarians can no longer win the group. Marcello Lippi's Italians have been in poor form but a victory would put them well clear of second place Ireland with Bulgaria then nine points behind and only two rounds of games to go.
Germany holds a one point lead over Russia in Group 4 and, with a home game against Azerbaijan, should stay ahead. The Russians visits Wales, which is all but out of contention for even a runners up spot.
Switzerland's 2-0 victory over Greece opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group 2 with the Greeks now level with Latvia. If the Swiss lose in Latvia on Wednesday and the Greeks beat Moldova, there would be a three-way tie at the top with two rounds of games to go. With the Netherlands already qualified at the top of Group 9, Scotland, Norway and Macedonia are chasing the runners up spot.
The Scots have a three-point advantage of their rivals but face the Dutch in Glasgow while Norway and Macedonia face each other. If the Scots lose, either of its chasing rivals can finish second. Torres, however, believes the World Cup would suffer from the absence of the planet's most recognized teams and players. The Spanish forward feels that, despite the resurgence of some of Europe's more unknown quantities, a "World Cup without Argentina, France or Portugal would not be the same. I would like them all to take part," the 25-year-old told a news conference two days after Spain beat Belgium 5-0 in a qualifier in La Coruna.
"We also struggled to qualify for the 2008 Euro finals and then we won the tournament," he added. "National squads change from one day to the other depending on the status of their players. They can go through a bad moment now and in the summer be one of the favourites."
