Germany — Germany coach Joachim Loew admitted he was delighted with his side's performance after their 2-0 win over South Africa in Saturday's friendly as several of his rising stars shone.

After Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez put his side ahead in the first-half, Werder Bremen winger Mesut Oezil - who was the inspirational figure behind Germany's Under-21 side's captivating victory at the European Championships in late June - capped a fine performance with the second-half goal which killed off the Bafana Bafana's challenge.

Germany had struggled to a 2-0 win against Azerbaijan last month in Baku which left Loew far from happy with his side's performance, but he was pleased with what he saw here.

"We created many good chances and were much more fluid in our football than last time," said Loew, who picked up his 29th win in charge since he succeeded Jurgen Klinsmann as national coach in August 2006.

"We gave some young players a chance, in particular Mesut brought a lot of creativity to our game.

"He has an eye for finding players in a better position and has lots of potential."

With South Africa set to host the 2010 World Cup, their Brazilian coach Joel Santana said the Bafana Bafana had benefited from the experience against their opponents ranked fourth in the world.

"It was a very good match for us," he said.

"The South African team were against one of the strongest who are ranked in the top four.

"The game gave us exactly what we wanted: international experience.

"We gave a good account of ourselves and I am happy with the performance."

With Germany facing minnows Azerbaijan again in Hanover in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, Loew got the dominance he had demanded in the game's build-up with his side rarely troubled by the South Africans.

Gomez, playing as a lone striker, scored his 11th international goal midway through the first-half before 20-year-old Oezil showed great composure to score his first goal for Germany.

We beat Russia 2-0 (yes, I know it’s unlikely, but I’m playing fantasy football), which puts us six points behind them with two games to play. We then beat Finland away (believe me that’s possible because they’re nowhere near as good as we made them look at the Millennium), while Russia lose to Germany. Done deal.

That puts us three points behind Russia, going into the last game in Group Four. We beat Liechtenstein (if we can’t do that, we might as well give up), while they go to... Azerbaijan.

I know that should, and probably will be, a shoo-in for a point or three. But it would be a bit akin to Wales trying to stop England. The Azeri’s chance to put one over the old enemy. Get my drift.

So Russia lose, we each end up on 18 points... and Wales nick second spot courtesy of the better head-to-head record against them, having lost just 2-1 in Moscow.

Of course, at this point we lose in the play-offs to a dodgy penalty kick which hits the crossbar, bounces back off Wayne Hennessey’s backside and squirms about a centimetre over the line.
