"The issue of who the next coach will be isn't even in our minds. The only thing that's occupying me is this team - that we bag 12 points and reach the elimination round," Luzon said.

"We have two important games, and it's important that we win them to stay in the picture," Kashtan said. "Today we have a solid base of talented players who could serve the team for many more years. I am naturally very optimistic - I always see the light."

When asked about tomorrow's match between Greece and Switzerland - in first and second place respectively in Group 2 - Kashtan brushed the question aside. "The only thing that interests me is our match in Ramat Gan. We don't need to be thinking about Switzerland, but about the here and now," he said.

In the past few days, Kashtan has had to make a series of tricky roster decisions. Avihai Yadin's injury brought midfielder Biram Kayal back in, and Tamir Cohen was also rushed back from Bolton Wanderers.

Another position up for grabs, right back, was granted to Yuval Spungin, while Omer Golan was tapped at striker instead of Espanyol's Ben Sahar. Beitar Jerusalem's Barak Itzhaki, it seems, will have to watch the match from the stands.

As for the absence of Tal Ben Haim amid the defender's transfer from Manchester City to Portsmouth, Kashtan said there was no cause for concern. "Ben Haim's absence won't make me play with three central defenders. You can be sure I'll only play with two," he said. "The team has played an attacking game throughout this whole campaign - we're not a defensive team. We have players with high technical ability and speed."

Asked about his relationship with Luzon and the IFA, and speculation that they are planning his imminent dismissal, Kashtan said, "Don't look for headlines. I don't know what you're talking about. My relationship with Luzon is fine. I've seen him a few times, we talked, there's no problem between us. Don't invent nonsense."

Also tomorrow, 40,000 fans are expected to fill St. Jakob-Park in Basel as Switzerland hosts group leader Greece. The Swiss squad has suffered a rash of injuries including midfielders Johan Vonlanthen and West Ham's Valon Behrami, but coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said yesterday he believes his charges will put up a fight.

"Greece is very strong," Hitzfeld said of the Euro 2004 champion, currently leading Group 2 on goal difference. "But Switzerland is without a doubt an excellent team, and we're up to the challenge."
